Let’s get things moving again… again.

Ok, ok. I’m sorry for waiting so long before doing this, but my life has been a mess lately, and at some point I just stopped doing anything at all. I think it’s enough to say that I’ve had this release finished for over a month, and I just couldn’t get myself to write this…

But In any case, I’m gonna try to stop being a lazy fuck, and get things going again, even if it needs to be 3 AM in the morning for me to do things.

So, yeah, I’ve subbed the Milky Holmes New Year Special a month ago… Wait, it’s been 2 months already. Where does time go? Anyway, sorry for taking so long to post it.

So, first of all, some translation notes, because some things got a little messy, like usual.

年貢の納め時 (Nengu no Osomedoki): Literally, this phrase means “It’s time to pay your annual taxes”, but it’s actually an idiom that goes more along the lines of reap what you sow, or to pay what it’s due. The reason why I went with the more literal translation is because it’s a new year special, and they were clearly referencing that.

Mastododon: Just in case this is needed: Mastodon

電人Ｍ (Denjin M): Denjin literally means electric person… So, a robot. But Robot M didn’t sound right. The M has a few… possible meanings. I’ll leave it to your imagination.

Minato Mirararai: Clearly referring to Minato Mirai.

Cordelia’s song: You can probably pause at the exact frame where I gave up. I spent the longest time on it, and in the end, I couldn’t make up half of the words anyway. Anyone that can figure it out is welcome to tell me so I can correct it.

I think that covers most things.

As for the previous year’s Christmas Special, MerryChristmas released it, and so did NoFunLoli before them.

As you probably know, there have been some Yume Nikki related news. I will leave the Light Novel fully translated here, but just for a few weeks. After that, ask your local goddess:

The reason why I’m deleting it in a few weeks is that J-Novel Club licensed it digitally, and you should support official releases and all that:

A new Yume Nikki game came out, there’s a new phone novel (spoiler alert: it’s not good, but I like the designs), and basically everything went crazy for a while when Kikiyama updated the webpage slightly to show he (?) was alive and well.

And finally, but not least, Umaru-chan’S was finished by Chao Mian Scanlations just while I was working on it again… Well, I should have been faster. I will probably finish what I’m working on anyway.

And of course, there’s the death of Batoto and nyaa, so most of my links don’t work anymore. I’ll try to replace them slowly this week.

 

That’s it for today. I have an ongoing manga project that I’m working currently on, but I want it to be a surprise, and depending on how things go, I may pick a new anime this season if no one picks it up (one with detectives solving mysteries, just like Milky Holmes…).

Milky Holmes Strikes Back

Has there ever been a better tittle for a comeback like this? I don’t think so.

So, yeah, I’m not dead. I’ve simply been busy with a few jobs, moving from here to there, and whatnot (and let’s admit it, I’ve been procrastinating a lot too). But everything seems to be settled now, so it should be safe to get back to work on things.

This is the famous Milky Movie. It’s timed to my own rip of the BD, but it should work with the raws at nyaa without a problem. The movie is quite fun, and a love letter to the fans of the first two seasons (even if it doesn’t reach it’s levels), so it’s worth a watch… and if you like it, you know, you could buy it to show you care, and convince them that we want more things like this.

Plans? Well, picking up everything I left incomplete, of course. You should see some updates in the next few weeks. There’s also a few things I want to pick up, but let’s finish what we have, and then move forward.

Edit: Oh, yeah, I totally forgot. Some translation notes.

七転八倒 (Shichitenbattou): This phrase could be translated as “fall seven times, and then an eighth one”. I decided to translate it for “Rise to fall ” to keep the reason why Sheryl mixes this one with the next one.

七転び八起き (Nanakorobiyaoki): This phrase literally means “Fall seven times, stand up eight”. As you can see it shares 3 of the 4 kanji that make it up with the previous one, and that’s why Sheryl keeps confusing them, even though they sound nothing alike.

草津よいとこ 一度はおいで (The song at the beginning): The translation of the lyrics are more or less literal, so there’s not much to explain here. Only that this is a folk song from the area of Kusatsu, well known for its hot springs. You can see a performance here, although it looks (and sounds) nothing like what we have in the movie.

I think that covers it. There are a few other things, but they should be mostly self-explanatory in the subs. If I remember something else, I’ll add it here.

About the last episodes of Milky Holmes TD

Well, as you know, we’re late with episodes 10 and 11 of TD. During last week, something came up for me, and I was unable to translate episode 10 until Saturday. Unfortunately, and while I’m on my usual schedule again, it seems lae is moving this week, so while he doesn’t fin a new apartment, he won’t be able to finish timing them either (although the last time we talked, he had already done more than half of 11th, and I’ll be taking over for him so he only has to tweak what I do for the release). That’s the reason we didn’t release the episode last week, and we probably won’t be releasing them this week either. I’m really sorry, but I hope you understand.

In any case, and just in time to save impatient people, Milky-Subs has released the episodes under [Nofunloli]. I’ve checked episode 10, and the subs are all right (although I think my translation is slightly better, probably due to the fact that I’m not only listening, but also reading the script so I don’t have to figure what they are saying out), so if you don’t want to wait, you can watch them without having to worry about that.

I hope we’re back with some releases soon (hopefully before the last one comes out). Meanwhile, remember to have fun, and enjoy the ending of this winter season.

And episode 9 is out! Talk about fast, I just sent the translation to lae a few hours ago.

This episode doesn’t have any translation for the insert song, since there are no lyrics available. I hope you can enjoy the episode anyway, although I know it’ll be hard without knowing what the song is about.

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes TD 07 – How will we revamp the yellow character stereotype?

So, for this week, we’ve changed the usual pattern. Instead of me releasing some badly timed subs and lae retiming and muxing them later, we’ve skipped the middle step, and I’ve sent him directly a translated, untimed script. While this gives both of us better schedules, it also means that I won’t be releasing the .ass any more, so sorry if someone downloaded a raw expecting me to.

Also, it seems like the Chinese Crunchiroll-like site, iqiyi, not only has Chinese subs, but also Japanese. This means we can now (we always could, but we know it now) get the lyrics for the insert songs and double-check translations and the parts that are hard to hear. So expect those from now on.

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes TD 06 – Everything’s being F5’d

I’m not being fast enough, am I? Episode 6 is here, but episode 7 is already out. Fortunately, I have no duties for tomorrow, or the day after, so I should be able to pull this off. Also, it looks like next week they will air episode 5 instead of 8, so probably no episode next week.

Anyway, here are the subs:

For this episode, lae was kind enough as to give me his timed script, that had a lot of signs and other cool things (like better timing). I left most of them taking care that they would look good without the fonts, but I may have forgotten something, so if you see anything wrong, tell me so I can fix it. I didn’t touch the opening or the ending either, so you may notice a few differences in typesetting and such.

Tantei Opera Milky Holmes TD 05 – Carol’s ransom

Fianlly, after waiting for so long, here it is! The video is available only in 360, though, so the quality won’t be the best.

The muxed episode was done by me, since episode 5 was kinda hard to get, and probably most of you don’t have the raws.

About episode 6, lae was kind enough to give me a timed script, so it should be done soon. Hopefully before the weekend.

Edit: Ok, now that I have some time, let’s fix this entry e little. First of all, I forgot to mention that the raw was provided by lae. He has been doing a lot of things for these, so we should be really thankful to him.

Second, about references: While I don’t usually mention them, there are a few obscure ones that I think should be mentioned. Things like Spulburg, or Carol being named after Lewis Carrol (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) should be pretty obvious. But there are others that are pretty obscure. The first one is kinda loose and lost in translation. At 17:12, Elly (and not Nero) says 積木くずし (Tsumiki Kuzushi), that literally means “To pull down the building blocks”. This is probably done in order to avoid mentioning Jenga. But it just happens that 積木くずし is the name of a TV drama that aired back in 1982. If I get that wikipedia article right (one never knows with the Japanese wikipedia), it’s about a delinquent girl and her surroundings. As you can see, it’s pretty far-fetched to think it’s really referencing it, and if it wasn’t because Elly is the one saying it, I wouldn’t even bother talking about it. She seems to be very knowledgeable about old things after all.

The other one is 巨人・大鵬・卵焼き (Kyojin·Taihou·Tamagoyaki). I must say sorry for suddenly covering half of the screen during the episode, but I couldn’t think of anything else to do. As explained briefly during that flash TLN, this was a popular phrase during the postwar (WWII) period in Japan(actually, around the 60’s, or so it seems). It refers to the Giants, Taihou Toki, and tamagoyaki. Why would mentioning three random words together become popular? Well, it’s a mystery (as if the Internet wasn’t doing the exact same thing every day), but apparently, it created by Sakaiya Taichi (Director General of Economic Planning Agency back in the day, but still working in politics currently on Abe’s party), and was used to convey the optimism in the Japanese scene at the time. Japan was growing a lot economically, the Giants were doing great, and Taihou was amazing. The exact sentence Taichi used was “Every kid loves the Giants, Taihou and tamagoyaki”.

Finally, I should also mention (just in case) the Glass Mask reference with Cordelia and Sheryl around 19:00.

About this week’s Milky Holmes

According to the official site of Milky Holmes TD, this week they won’t air “Carol’s Ransom” due to the current circumstances (probably related to ISIS and the kidnapping of Japanese workers, and the ransom they asked for to release them). Instead, they will be reairing the first episode. There’s no information about when (or even if) the episode will air. The other series that delayed their episodes like Assassination Classroom will air the episodes some time later, though, so this is what will probably happen here too… hopefully.

I will update this post with any new info we get on this.

Edit: The schedule for the online broadcast of episode 5 hasn’t changed, according to the official site. It will be released at Niconico Live Broadcast at 23:00 on the 4th, at Niconico Channel at 23:30 on the same day, and at Bandai Channel at 12:00 on the 5th. Details for the broadcast everywhere else are still not decided.
