Katrielle Layton’s Mystery Detective Agency – Episode 10

Here we are another week. This time, Kat doesn’t have much time to shine, but daddy will show us what he’s capable of, and that age is just a puzzle that you can ignore after you solve it. No, seriously, how old is Layton supposed to be? 37 in the Unwound Future, Kat is 21, this episode is 11 years ago… He must be around 50?

In any case, I like how everyone is so close that they almost don’t need any honorifics during the episode, and there’s no localization for the names mentioned. That made my job a little easier this time around.

And here we are another week. In this episode, I had some fun with the different sub tracks, so don’t judge me.

Next week we’ll have Hershel himself appearing, which is surprising, considering Emiliana/Geraldine is nowhere to be seen yet, even though she appears in the credits since episode one. I’m curious about her, but at least, Mei was cute this episode. I want a maid like that.

Our privacy policy has be… wait, wrong mindset. Let’s leave work at work.

Finally, and after a little break (nothing happened, I was just really tired, and as soon as I arrived from work, I went to sleep for the last two weeks), we are back with more of Kat’s cute antics.

Since there are 3 episodes here (episode 6 has been up for a while, but I didn’t make a post about it), I have a few things to talk about, translation wise. So let’s get to it.

Episode 6

  • Braims/Brahms: So there’s a little mistake in this episode. The grave by the tree shows clearly the name Braims. The grandma’s photo shows clearly the name Brahms. Both can’t be right. Since the grave appears longer in the episode and is more noticeable, I decided to go with Braims, although I feel Brahms sounds better.
  • The Lullaby: I tried to translate it (if you check the .ass files, you can probably see a few timed lines), but there’s too much background noise and echo.
  • Tartathan: Ok, this was a mistake of mine. It’s tarte tatin, as pointed by jorgelotr. I should have trusted wikipedia on this one.

Episode 7

  • そうこう解決 (Soukou Kaiketsu): This basically means successful resolution, or satisfactory result. It’s Ratman’s catchphrase, although Noah/Ernest uses it to refer to Kat’s resolution. The official translation for this, according to a quick search on youtube, was something along the lines “Ratman brings you doom”… I decided not to use this.

Episode 8

  • Hermet: The Hermet safe is originally called Haireen (ハイレーン), that sounds a lot like a short version of “Can’t get inside”. Hermet is the official translation, but I used it for the honorifics version since otherwise the meaning wouldn’t be conveyed. I also think it’s a good localization.

Now, on another note, it looks like Saizen has decided to pick this up too. They are going for a more localized translation, closer to how the game feels (I only change the names in the second track, while they change speak patterns and everything that was changed during the official localization), so if you are interested in that, be sure to check them out (obviously, since this takes a lot of effort, I’m probably gonna keep ahead of them. They have a proper team and a process, while I make up things as I go).

But that’s not all. There are more news. They are relaunching the oiriginal Layton game on phone, and Kat’s game for Switch (I guess I can buy it again). The Switch one will even have some kind of interaction with some girly “toys” (they are actually accessories, but I guess they are nice, I wouldn’t mind buying some) they are releasing (link). There’s no news about BDs/DVDs, and the manga page sends you to Ciao-land’s main webpage, so I’ll keep an eye on those.

And now, some unrelated news. Yume Nikki: Dream Diary has a new version, and is on sale! This new update looks really good (haven’t been able to play yet), and it really feels like they are listening to feedback. If they keep updating the game, we may end with something really nice there. I’ll leave here a link to the video of the update.

Edit: Ok, so this just happened.

Katrielle Layton’s Mystery Detective Agency – Episode 05

[Ohys-Raws] Layton Mystery Tanteisha Katri no Nazotoki File - 05 (CX 1280x720 x264 AAC).mp4_snapshot_14.00_[2018.05.06_02.45.25]

Another week, another episode. This week, an easy mystery to compensate for last week’s… unlikely solution.

In this week’s episode, we have a little wordplay with these words:

  • 美女 (Bijo): beautiful woman
  • 貧乏 (Binbou): poor/poverty
  • ビスケット (Biscuit): Biscuit (surprisingly)

I didn’t really try to keep it in English. I think it’s pretty obvious, and beautiful/biscuit are as similar as bijo/biuscuit (i.e.: not at all).

Like always, let me know of any problem or feedback, and I’ll keep it in mind for future releases and an eventual v2 .

By the way, after a week listening to it, I can say Millenium Mother is good (Summoning 101 is pretty good, and so is Vitamins, but my favorite one is probably With a Billion Worldful of <3), in case anyone cared about my opinion.

Katrielle Layton’s Mystery Detective Agency – Episode 04

[Dreamless] Layton's Mystery Detective Agency - Katry's Mystery Solving Files - 04 (CX 1280x720 x264 AAC).mkv_snapshot_11.05_[2018.05.01_02.31.07]

And here we are with episode 4.

Now, I have a little confession to make. There’s one thing I really, really hate about translating anime. You can’t listen to music while you are doing it. And this week has been  specially harsh in that regard, as I haven’t been able to listen to all the songs in Millenium Mother (yes, I’m recommending some music, because I really like Mili and I want them to sell more).

In any case, this episode gave me a few headaches, so I decided to go for naturalness and flow. Specially in some of the descriptions, I had to chose between keeping thins simple and logins some… well, descriptions, or filling the whole screen with subtitles that people wouldn’t be able to read before they disappeared.

As usual, let me know about any feedback you may have, and enjoy the episode.

Katrielle Layton’s Mystery Detective Agency – Episode 03

[Dreamless] Layton's Mystery Detective Agency - Katry's Mystery Solving Files - 03 (CX 1280x720 x264 AAC).mkv_snapshot_10.21_[2018.04.24_04.47.39]

Another week, another episode!

So far so good. I’ll do my best to keep up the pace. Kat makes it easy though. She’s a really enjoyable character, and I’m loving all her expressions.

I don’t have much to say about this week’s episode. There are no translation notes or anything (this series is pretty simple in that regard, even if it makes me struggle from time to time with certain phrases). If anything maybe this one:

  • 墓地 (Bochi): Simply means graveyard. You’ll hear it many times during the episode.
  • 罰当たり (Bachiatari): To get bad karma or bad luck. Literally, to hit (atari) on a punishment (bachi, the same kanji used as for batsu in punishment games, for example (罰ゲーム)).

It could be a little bit of wordplay, or something that happened by chance, but bochi and bachi are clearly similar, and 罰当たり is used in a graveyard.

Someone asked for the subs by themselves, so they are there too. Keep in mind that the fonts are attached, so they are kinda big for text files.

Katrielle Layton’s Mystery Detective Agency – Episode 02

[Dreamless] Layton's Mystery Detective Agency - Katry's Mystery Solving Files - 02 (CX 1280x720 x264 AAC).mkv_snapshot_05.21_[2018.04.17_03.21.22]

So here I am again, with a new release from this series (sorry for the delay on the post, as I’ve been quite busy yesterday, and pretty much sleepwalking at the time of the release).

For translation things, someone pointed a mistake I made when the old lady is talking with Pastel and Olivia, but I won’t get into the details here for reasons that will be obvious for anyone that catches on it.

On the other hand, it looks like Katrielle is making a mistake of her own. Fudge is not a British sweet. It looks to have originated in America. Toffee, on the other hand, is pretty common and a traditional sweet in the UK. I guess they mixed both, since they have a similar appearance.

On a different note… that link up there doesn’t work currently. Nyaa.si is down. It seems that there’s an alternative called nyaa.at, but I’m hearing tales of it using crypto-mining scripts on your computer, so use with care if you really need it.

Finally, I have a few questions for you. Would you be interested in V2 releases with fixes (grammar, style, ect.)? If you are, would you prefer me to release them now, or wait for the BD or a better video source?

And the other question is related to a technical issue someone mentioned. When you open the video, is no subs track active by default? If so, what media player do you use? I will try to figure it out for next week’s episode.

Edit: Nyaa is working again.

Katrielle Layton’s Mystery Detective Agency – Episode 01

[Ohys-Raws] Layton Mystery Tanteisha Katri no Nazotoki File - 01 (CX 1280x720 x264 AAC).mp4_snapshot_03.01_[2018.04.09_02.32.16]

I bet you thought I was gonna disappear for over a year again. Not yet!

As I said in my previous post, I just started another series from this season with a cute girl solving mysteries. Because that’s why we are all here, right?

In any case, I’ve muxed this myself from ohys-raws (it’s been too long since I did this, I had almost forgotten how it worked). There are two subs tracks. The default one uses honorifics, and the original Japanese names (you’ll see they are quite different from the official ones in English). The other track, obviously, uses the official English ones.

In case anyone is interested in seeing the differences, these are the names of the recurring characters. Left is Japanese, right is English:

  • Katrielle (this is the same in both languages. For the short name, I use Katry vs Kat).
  • Noah Montreaux vs Ernest Greeves
  • Sher vs Sherl (this is simply because Sherl-san felt weird)
  • Geraldine Royer vs Emiliana Perfetti
  • Darjeeling Aspoirot vs Ercule Hastings

The songs subs are timed to the Japanese subs, not to the voice, so it may feel weird sometimes.

As always, feel free to point any mistake or any feedback you have.

My intention is to keep releasing this until the end. That’s 50 episodes, or almost a year. Let’s see if I can keep it up.
